Originally acquired in 1991 as a 54-acre site with 1,281 units of badly deteriorated rental housing in an economically and socially depressed neighborhood of Southeast Washington, DC, The Villages of Parklands today encompasses 101 acres and includes a 16.5 acre site housing a community recreation center, 112,000 square feet of retail space including a 66,000 square foot Super Giant Grocery store and the first IHOP of Ward 8, 1,060 mixed-income garden apartments, 210 single-family townhomes, and 75 single-family detached homes in different phases of construction.
