Neighborhood

Development of Dupont Circle originally called Pacific Circle began in 1871. The name change occurred after a statue of Rear Admiral Samuel Francis Du Pont was erected. (This statue has since been replaced by the marble fountain we see today, which symbolizes the Wind, Sea, and Stars.)

Dupont Circle centers around the intersection of D.C.'s three best-known causeways: Connecticut Avenue, Massachusetts Avenue, and New Hampshire Avenue. Though the neighborhood boasts an active nightlife, the area is primarily residential. Freestanding houses and palatial mansions line the broader avenues, while the grid streets are comprised of rowhouses, typically in Queen Anne and Richardsonian Romanesque styles.

Today, Dupont Circle houses a wide variety of art studios, cinemas, restaurants, bars, and coffee shops. These, along with the area's unique architecture, make Dupont one of the most popular areas in D.C.--both to live and to have fun.
